This patient’s severe underbite caused her lower jaw to protrude forward, so her lower row of teeth covered her upper row. She underwent orthodontic surgery to correct her jaw position and followed an Invisalign regimen to correct alignments, giving her some stunning results.

The patient’s underbite was resolved; they were thrilled with their new smile and improved facial structure.

This patient experienced a moderate underbite that caused his lower row of teeth to jut forward slightly and extend over the upper row of teeth. His teeth had also shifted due to severe crowding.

He underwent orthognathic surgery in conjunction with traditional braces. Soon after, he was left with properly aligned teeth, a corrected jaw position, and a smile he “absolutely loves!”

Patient 3, a young individual, presented with a pronounced forward jaw protrusion, resulting in the lower jaw and teeth overlapping in front of the upper teeth. To address this issue, the BHO team initiated a treatment plan with traditional braces. We also planned for orthognathic surgery (jaw surgery) along with the braces. These braces were strategically designed to gradually realign the teeth by guiding them backward. Additionally, elastic bands were incorporated into the treatment to enhance the effectiveness of both teeth and jaw alignment.

What Is an Underbite?

Underbites – a prevalent malocclusion – manifest when the lower set of teeth juts forward, resulting in substantial overlap of the upper teeth and a noticeable divide when the jaws are closed.

These underbites come in varying levels of severity, from subtle to highly conspicuous. Beyond cosmetic considerations, they can also pose functional and oral health challenges. These issues encompass difficulties in biting and chewing, speech impediments, accelerated tooth wear and damage, jaw discomfort from strained muscles and joints, and may also affect facial structure.

Reverse Pull Headgear: Tailored for correcting significant underbites in pediatric patients, Reverse Pull headgear stabilizes both the jaw and teeth, aligning them properly during the formative years. This treatment typically entails wearing the headgear for 12-14 hours daily for 12-18 months, effectively addressing underbite concerns without necessitating extensive surgical procedures.
Jaw Surgery: Orthognathic surgery may become a crucial step in treating severe underbites, particularly in older patients with a substantial difference in jaw size. This surgical procedure entails repositioning the upper and lower jaws to establish the correct alignment. Typically, surgery is contemplated after the conclusion of orthodontic treatment to ensure comprehensive correction.
Tooth extraction: Tooth extraction presents a practical option for individuals experiencing underbites due to overcrowding. By strategically removing the teeth responsible for misalignment, orthodontic professionals can effectively generate the required space to eliminate the underbite.

Invisalign: Invisalign offers a compelling alternative for individuals grappling with dental underbites resulting from misalignments. So far I am having an amazing experience with Dr Madan and BHO. I’ve consulted with many Orthos over the years for Invisalign. Almost all said I would have to extract a tooth to solve over crowding issue on bottom teeth. Within literally 5 weeks of Invisalign, my bottom teeth are almost completely straightened out already. I cannot believe how fast this treatment is working. Not to mention, I had tradition braces in the past and my teeth fully reverted to their original form. It took over 4 years to correct my crowding with braces the first time, back in the day.
