This patient came to us to correct her rotated lower front teeth and her anterior open bite.

Patient 2

This patient’s chief complaint was that her top and bottom front teeth didn’t align. She wanted her teeth to contact like they did right after she finished her braces the last time – and she wanted a better profile.

We prescribed Invisalign aligners to get her teeth into the correct position and keep them there. She now has the profile she always wanted – and a gorgeous smile to go with it.

Patient 3

This patient was referred to us to correct his anterior open bite. He already had gum recession around several teeth when he arrived at our office. Dr. Madan treated this patient’s open bite using Invisalign. He is able to use his front teeth to bite into and tear food. For example, seaweed in sushi or lettuce in a sandwich. This function has been a game changer in terms of quality of life.

What is an open bite?

For a standard bite, the top teeth contact and slightly overlap the bottom teeth all the way around the mouth. In an open bite, there is a space between the upper and lower front teeth and they do not overlap. Because the front teeth don’t touch, it can put extra pressure on the teeth that do make contact, leading to problems now and later in life. 

Open bites can manifest in two main ways:

  • Anterior (Front) open bite: This is where your front teeth do not meet and is the most common and noticeable form of open bite. Anterior open bites can include just two teeth not contacting or several teeth not touching. 
  • Posterior (Back) open bite: Posterior open bites aren’t usually visible when a person smiles, so they might go unnoticed for longer, but this form of open bite can cause many other problems and still needs to be corrected. Like anterior open bites, posterior open bites can involve very few teeth in contact.

Open bites can cause issues beyond your smile’s appearance. If your teeth don’t touch correctly, it can cause problems with eating, chewing, talking, or tooth trauma for the other teeth in your mouth that make contact. How Are Open Bites Treated?

Invisalign: Invisalign aligners are custom-fit trays that can move people’s teeth in position the same way as traditional braces, without many of the downsides of metal brackets and wires. Invisalign can move teeth into the correct position while being less noticeable and more convenient.
Braces: Traditional metal braces involve brackets attached to the tooth and an archwire connecting everything. Teeth are gradually moved into position by pressure from the wire and any headgear or elastics.
Elastics: Elastics can be used along with traditional braces. Elastics are rubber bands that can add slight pressure to help pull the teeth into proper alignment.

Surgery: Surgery might sometimes be necessary to reposition the jaw bones to get all the teeth to make proper contact.
