What Adults Should Prioritize When Choosing Orthodontic Treatment

Love Yourself, Love Your Smile

What Adults Should Know About Choosing Orthodontic Treatment

Adults should prioritize six key factors when choosing an orthodontic treatment plan: personal smile goals, discretion, lifestyle fit, comfort, total cost, and provider expertise. Unlike teen care, adult orthodontics accounts for a fully developed jaw, existing restorations, and busy professional lives. The right plan aligns with your daily routine and long-term oral beauty.

More adults than ever are exploring their options. Some want to correct issues that were never addressed in childhood. Others are ready to invest in themselves after years of putting it off. Whatever brings you in, today’s treatment options are lighter, more discreet, and more flexible than the braces you may remember.

Adult patients deserve help weighing what matters most to them. That means looking beyond the aesthetic result and thinking about how treatment fits into work, travel, and social life. Whether you’re in Los Angeles or somewhere quieter, the goal stays the same: a plan built around your real life.

The six priorities we’ll cover below are the same ones our team walks through during every free consult. Use them as your checklist as you compare plans.

Key Factors Adults Should Prioritize When Choosing Treatment

When you’re comparing plans, six factors carry the most weight. Keep this short list in mind as you read on:

  • Smile goals. What you actually want to change, from alignment to spacing to bite.
  • Discretion. How visible you’re comfortable with treatment being day to day.
  • Lifestyle fit. How well the option works with travel, meetings, and meals.
  • Comfort. How each appliance feels and adapts to your mouth over time.
  • Total cost. The full investment, including retainers and follow-up.
  • Provider expertise. The training and experience behind your treatment plan.

Each section below maps back to one or more of these priorities, so you can compare options with confidence.

How Adult Orthodontic Treatment Planning Works

Adult orthodontic treatment planning begins with a full clinical exam, digital scans, and X-rays to map your bite, jaw structure, and any existing restorations. Your orthodontist then discusses your smile goals, recommends appliances that match your case, and builds a personalized plan with an estimated timeline, appointment frequency, and retention strategy.

Here’s what the process typically looks like:

  1. Free consult and records. We take digital scans, panoramic X-rays, and photos. No messy impressions.
  2. Goal discussion. You share what you want to change. Alignment, spacing, bite correction, or all three.
  3. Custom plan design. Your orthodontist maps tooth movement, appliance choice, and total treatment length.
  4. Active treatment. You wear braces or aligners and return for check-ins every 4 to 8 weeks.
  5. Retention. After teeth reach their new positions, retainers hold the result long-term.

Progress isn’t set in stone. Your orthodontist reviews your movement at each visit and adjusts the plan when needed. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, regular monitoring is essential to keeping treatment on track and catching small issues before they become bigger ones.

Retention is where many adults underestimate the commitment. Teeth naturally want to shift back, so wearing retainers as directed protects your investment. Our skilled orthodontist and team build that retention step into your plan from the start, not as an afterthought once treatment ends.

Benefits of Getting Orthodontic Treatment as an Adult

Adult orthodontic treatment offers five main benefits: easier cleaning, reduced tooth wear, less jaw tension, greater confidence, and discreet options that suit professional life. Straight teeth aren’t just about looks. They’re easier to clean, which lowers your risk of decay and gum disease over time. When teeth fit together properly, chewing becomes more efficient and jaw strain often eases.

Here are the main benefits adults report:

  • Better oral beauty. Fewer tight spaces mean brushing and flossing actually reach everywhere.
  • Reduced wear. A corrected bite spreads chewing force evenly, protecting enamel from uneven grinding.
  • Less jaw tension. Bite issues can contribute to soreness, headaches, and clicking. Alignment often helps.
  • Confidence at work and beyond. A smile you’re proud of shows up in job interviews, first dates, and photos.
  • Discreet options that fit your life. Clear aligners and tooth-colored braces let you go about your day without drawing attention.

Why Are Straight Teeth Easier to Clean?

Crowded or overlapping teeth create tight pockets where a toothbrush and floss simply can’t reach. Plaque builds up in those hidden spots, raising your risk of decay and gum inflammation. Once teeth are properly aligned, brushing and flossing cover every surface, which makes your daily routine more effective and your checkups smoother.

Is It Ever Too Late to Start as an Adult?

Not at all. Adults in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond finish treatment every year at our practice. Ortho is for everyone, and they finish thrilled with the change in both their smile and their daily comfort.

Get the confidence you need to make a brilliant first impression. That’s what this is really about.

Comparing Adult Treatment Options: Invisalign vs Braces

Most adults choose between Invisalign and braces, and both work well when matched to the right case. Invisalign uses clear, removable trays that are nearly invisible and comfortable for professional settings. Braces are fixed to the teeth and excel at handling complex bite corrections and rotations that aligners can’t address as efficiently.

Here’s a side-by-side look:

Feature Invisalign Braces
Visibility Nearly invisible Visible (clear ceramic options available)
Removable Yes, for eating and brushing No, fixed in place
Best for Mild to moderate cases Complex bite and rotation issues
Eating restrictions None (remove trays) Some foods to avoid
Cleaning Brush and floss normally Requires extra tools and time
Compliance 20-22 hours daily wear required Works passively 24/7
Typical treatment length 6-24 months 12-30 months
Office visits Every 6-10 weeks Every 4-8 weeks

Accelerated orthodontics can shorten treatment time for qualifying cases. Ask about this during your free consult if speed is a top priority.

The right pick usually comes down to two things: how complex your case is, and how much removability matters in your daily routine. Frequent travelers, public speakers, and camera-facing professionals often lean toward Invisalign. Patients with severe crowding or bite issues sometimes get better results with braces, or a combination approach.

At Beverly Hills Orthodontics, our team has deep experience matching adults with the option that actually fits their case, not just the one that sounds trendiest. Dr. Madan and her team review each case carefully so your plan reflects your goals rather than a one-size-fits-all template.

How Much Does Adult Orthodontic Treatment Cost?

Adult orthodontic costs depend on case complexity, appliance type, and treatment length. Simple alignment cases cost less than full-bite corrections requiring longer treatment. Invisalign and braces typically fall within similar price ranges at established practices, and most offices offer flexible monthly payment plans, insurance coordination, and financing to keep treatment simple and affordable and easy to plan for.

When you’re comparing quotes, look at more than the sticker price:

  • Case complexity. Minor crowding costs less than a full-bite overhaul.
  • Appliance type. Standard metal braces, clear ceramic braces, Invisalign, and lingual braces have different price points.
  • Treatment length. Longer plans mean more visits and often more cost.
  • Retainers and follow-up. Retention is part of the total investment, not an afterthought.
  • Insurance and HSA/FSA. Many adult plans include orthodontic benefits. Check what yours covers.

Our team helps patients build a payment plan that fits their monthly budget. Value matters more than the lowest number. Straighter teeth are easier to clean, which can help lower your long-term dental costs. That’s a return on investment your future self will appreciate.

Are You a Good Candidate for Adult Orthodontics?

Most healthy adults are candidates. If your teeth and gums are in good shape, and you’re committed to the wear-time and hygiene requirements, treatment is almost always possible. This holds true whether you’re in Beverly Hills, elsewhere in Los Angeles, or beyond.

A few things your orthodontist will check:

  • Gum health. Active gum disease must be treated before starting. Moving teeth through inflamed tissue causes damage.
  • Existing restorations. Crowns, veneers, bridges, and implants change the game. Implants don’t move, so they’re planned around, not through.
  • Bone health. Adequate bone support is needed for safe tooth movement.
  • Commitment level. Invisalign requires 20-22 hours of daily wear. Braces require careful cleaning and avoiding certain foods.
  • Overall health. Some medications and conditions affect bone metabolism. Share your full medical history at your free consult.

The only way to know for sure is a consultation. Our team reviews scans, discusses your goals, and gives you a straight answer about what’s possible. No pressure, no guesswork.

Dr. Monica Madan, DDS, MS and her team bring years of experience to every case review. That depth matters when you’re evaluating complex adult treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Adult Orthodontic Treatment

How long does adult orthodontic treatment take?

Most adult treatment falls between 12 and 24 months, though simple cases can wrap up in 6 months and complex ones may run closer to 30 months. Adults sometimes see slightly longer timelines than teens because jaw bone is denser and teeth move at a more measured pace. Your orthodontist gives you a personalized estimate at your free consult.

Is Invisalign or braces better for adults?

Neither is universally better. Invisalign is often preferred by adults for its discretion and removability, especially in professional settings. Braces tend to be more efficient for complex bite corrections, severe rotations, or cases needing precise control. The right pick depends on your case, your lifestyle, and your priorities.

Will treatment be uncomfortable or interfere with work?

Most adults describe mild soreness for a few days after starting treatment or switching aligners, similar to a good workout for your teeth. It rarely interferes with work. Invisalign is especially discreet, so meetings, presentations, and video calls carry on normally. Over-the-counter relief and soft foods help during adjustment periods.

Can I get braces if I have crowns or implants?

Yes, in most cases. Crowns can have brackets attached with special bonding. Implants can’t be moved because they fuse to bone, so your orthodontist plans tooth movement around them. Bridges may need to be evaluated separately. A full exam with Dr. Madan and her team clarifies exactly what’s possible for your existing restorations.

Is orthodontic treatment worth it as an adult?

For most patients, absolutely. Straighter teeth are easier to clean, reducing long-term risk of decay and gum disease. A corrected bite protects enamel and eases jaw strain. And the self-confidence that comes from loving your smile shows up in every part of life. Adults who invest in treatment consistently say they wish they’d done it sooner.

I got my Invisalign here and the process was absolutely incredible and easy. They took really good care of me and everyone at the office was very nice and polite. One of the technicians, Anthony, went above and beyond during the appointments and Dr. Maden was always there overseeing everything and making sure everything was going smoothly. 10/10 recommend coming here
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for the exceptional 10/10 recommendation! We are thrilled to hear that your Invisalign process was so seamless and that you felt incredibly well cared for by our team. We truly appreciate your support!
Ryan C.
I recommend BHO if you want premier Invisalign treatment along with a strong connection with the people that help treat you. I’ve been with BHO for around two and a half years now, and the amount of progress I’ve made in my bite is astounding. I wish I could attach photos, but I started off with a bite that looked like if you combined the worst parts of a crossbite and underbite, and then doubled the severity. However, now I’m nearly done, and find that I when I smile and look in the mirror, I am genuinely happy at what I see. Dr. Madan is a great orthodontist without doubt, but also I believe equally as good in quality of character. The relationship between client and provider in any sort of medical service is paramount, and whenever I’ve brought up my concerns to her she’s answered wholeheartedly. Once again, if you have any orthodontic issues - crooked teeth, gaps, or most importantly with your bite, then BHO won’t let you down.
Response from the owner:Thank you, Ryan, for your wonderful review! It’s fantastic to hear about your remarkable progress and your positive experience with Dr. Madan. We’re committed to building strong relationships and ensuring every smile shines bright!
Cindy M.
