What Are the Best Braces Options for Kids and Preteens?

What Are the Best Braces Options for Kids and Preteens?

The best braces for a child depend on three things: the bite problem being treated, the child’s stage of growth, and how reliably they will follow the routine an appliance needs. Metal braces are the most versatile choice, clear ceramic braces suit image-conscious preteens, LightForce adds custom-made precision, and Invisalign First can work for younger children who will wear aligners consistently.

There is no single best option for every child, and the cosmetic preference — theirs or yours — should come second to what the bite needs. Below is how each option works for kids, how they compare, how to weigh your child’s habits and activities, and what to expect from the first evaluation.

When Should a Child First See an Orthodontist?

Timing shapes which options make sense, so it comes before the appliance question.

The first evaluation by age 7

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a child’s first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At that age permanent teeth are coming in and the jaws are still growing, so developing problems are easier to spot and often easier to guide.

An evaluation is not the same as starting braces

Many children seen at 7 do not need treatment yet. The point is to identify problems early and plan the right moment to act. Some children benefit from early orthodontic treatment; many simply come back for monitoring.

Problems that are easier to treat early

Crowding, gaps, overbites, underbites, crossbites, early or late loss of baby teeth and jaw growth issues are all easier to address while a child is still growing. Treating at the right time can shorten or simplify later treatment.

Which Braces Options Work Best for Children?

These are the options we offer children and preteens at BHO, as listed on our braces for kids page.

Traditional metal braces

Metal braces are tried, true and highly effective, and modern brackets are smaller and more comfortable than they used to be. They correct a wide range of problems, they are durable, and because they are fixed to the teeth they keep working without a child having to remember anything. That is why they are often the preferred choice for younger children.

Clear ceramic braces

Clear ceramic braces work the same way as metal ones but use tooth-colored brackets. For older children and preteens who are self-conscious about appearance, they offer a subtler look with the strength of a fixed appliance. They need careful brushing around the brackets.

LightForce custom braces

LightForce brackets are 3D printed for each individual tooth, based on a digital model of your child’s mouth. That customization brings precision and comfort, and BHO places them using indirect bonding, which sets the brackets in one step rather than tooth by tooth. Our LightForce versus metal braces comparison goes into the differences in detail.

Invisalign First for younger children

Invisalign First is a clear aligner system built for growing children, usually between about 6 and 10. It is part of a two-phase approach and is designed to correct developing bite problems, create room for incoming permanent teeth and guide jaw growth. Not every child is a candidate, so Dr. Madan evaluates growth stage and development first.

Invisalign for teens

For older children moving into their teens, standard Invisalign for teens is another option once the permanent teeth are in, provided the child is ready to manage removable aligners.

How Do Kids’ Braces Options Compare?

This summary is a starting point for the conversation, not a substitute for an exam.

Option Best suited to What it asks of your child Main trade-off
Metal braces Most bite problems, including complex ones Brushing well and avoiding hard, sticky foods Most visible option
Clear ceramic braces Older kids and preteens who want discretion Extra care cleaning around brackets Brackets need careful cleaning
LightForce braces Children who benefit from custom precision Same care as other fixed braces Still a visible fixed appliance
Invisalign First Growing children, usually about 6 to 10 Wearing aligners as prescribed every day Only works if worn consistently
Invisalign for teens Older kids with permanent teeth in Consistent wear and tracking aligners Relies on responsibility

How Do You Choose Between Fixed Braces and Aligners for Your Child?

Once the orthodontist has told you which options are clinically appropriate, the choice often comes down to these factors.

The bite problem comes first

Some corrections are better handled with fixed braces working around the clock. Others suit aligners well. Your orthodontist’s recommendation on that point should outweigh every other preference.

An honest look at your child’s habits

Aligners only work in the mouth. If your child loses things, forgets routines or would quietly leave trays out, a fixed appliance is often kinder to everyone. If they are organized and motivated, aligners can be a good fit.

Activities, sports and instruments

Contact sports and wind instruments can influence the choice. Mention them at the consultation, because they affect comfort and protection during treatment.

How your child feels about appearance

For many preteens, appearance matters a lot. When more than one option is clinically sound, choosing the one your child is comfortable with can make cooperation much easier.

Your schedule and school calendar

Fixed braces need regular adjustment visits, while aligners are checked at set intervals. Ask how often your child would need to be seen and plan around school and activities from the start.

What you can realistically support at home

Every option needs some help from parents, whether that is checking aligner wear or reminding a child about brushing around brackets. Choose an option your family can support for the whole treatment.

What Does Two-Phase Treatment Mean for Your Child?

Parents often hear the term at a first evaluation. It explains why some children are treated young and then treated again later.

Phase one works with growth

The first phase happens while baby and permanent teeth are mixed and the jaws are still growing. Its job is to correct developing bite problems, create room for incoming teeth and guide jaw growth. Invisalign First is one of the tools designed for this stage.

A resting period in between

After phase one, there is usually a period of monitoring while the remaining permanent teeth come in. Your orthodontist checks progress and decides when, or whether, further treatment is needed.

Phase two finishes the bite

Once the permanent teeth are in, a second phase with braces or aligners fine-tunes alignment and the final bite. Because growth problems were addressed earlier, this phase is often simpler than it would otherwise have been.

Not every child needs two phases

Two-phase treatment is a recommendation for specific problems, not a default. Many children are best treated once, when their permanent teeth are in. A good evaluation tells you which applies.

How Do Kids Care for Braces or Aligners Day to Day?

The daily routine matters as much as the appliance. Setting expectations early avoids most problems.

Brushing and cleaning with fixed braces

Brackets create spots where food and plaque collect. Children need to brush carefully around every bracket and along the gum line, and parents may need to check for the first few weeks until the habit sticks.

Food choices with braces

Hard, sticky and chewy foods can bend wires or loosen brackets. Cutting crunchy foods into small pieces and skipping sticky sweets keeps unplanned repair visits to a minimum.

Wear time and storage with aligners

Aligners are removed to eat and then cleaned and put straight back in. A case for storage at school and at meals prevents the most common problem: trays wrapped in a napkin and thrown away.

When something breaks or hurts

A poking wire or a loose bracket is rarely an emergency, but it should be reported promptly. Call the office, describe the problem and follow the advice you are given until your child can be seen.

What Happens at Your Child’s First Orthodontic Visit?

Knowing what to expect makes the first visit easier for both of you.

A full evaluation, not just a look at the teeth

The orthodontist examines the jaw, the bite, facial growth patterns and the permanent teeth that are coming in. This is how problems are found before they are obvious.

Digital records instead of goopy impressions

At BHO we use 5D iTero digital scanning to build a 3D model of the mouth, which most children find much easier than traditional impressions.

A clear recommendation, including wait and watch

You should leave knowing whether your child needs treatment now, later or at all, and which options suit them. “Not yet” is a common and perfectly good answer.

Questions worth bringing

Write down what you have noticed — teeth coming in crooked, a bite that looks off, thumb-sucking, mouth breathing or trouble chewing. Ask what the orthodontist sees, whether treatment is needed now, which options suit your child, and what the next checkpoint will be.

Monitoring visits if treatment can wait

When the answer is “not yet,” your child returns periodically so the orthodontist can watch growth and tooth eruption. These short visits catch the moment when treatment will do the most good, without starting earlier than needed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Braces for Kids and Preteens

What age is best for a child to get braces?

It varies with each child. A first evaluation by age 7 is recommended; some children start early treatment soon after, while many wait until more permanent teeth are in.

Are metal braces better than Invisalign for kids?

Neither is better for every child. Metal braces handle a wider range of problems and do not rely on wear time. Invisalign First and Invisalign for teens can work well when the case suits aligners and the child wears them consistently.

Can my child play sports with braces?

Yes. Children play sports throughout treatment. Ask your orthodontist about mouth protection suited to the appliance your child has.

Do clear braces work as well as metal braces?

Clear ceramic braces work the same way as metal braces. They provide the strength of a fixed appliance with a subtler look, and they need a little more care when cleaning.
