How Cold Weather Affects Braces and Invisalign — And What You Can Do About It

Love Yourself, Love Your Smile

How Cold Weather Affects Braces and Invisalign

When the temperature drops in Los Angeles — even just a little — it can bring more than chilly mornings and extra layers. For those wearing braces or Invisalign, cold weather may also affect your comfort, habits, and even how your appliances feel day to day.

While LA’s winters are mild compared to other cities, cooler temperatures, drier air, and seasonal routines can still impact your orthodontic experience. Understanding how cold weather affects your treatment can help you stay comfortable and on track, whether you’re rocking braces or clear aligners.

Let’s take a look at what actually happens to braces and Invisalign during winter and what you can do to keep your smile progress moving forward.

Does Cold Weather Affect Braces?

Yes — but not in the way you might think.

Braces are made from durable materials like stainless steel or ceramic that hold up well in a variety of climates. However, cold weather can still bring some challenges, especially related to:

1. Tooth Sensitivity

Lower temperatures may increase tooth sensitivity for some patients, particularly if your teeth are already sore from recent adjustments. The cold air can cause discomfort when you breathe through your mouth or drink cold beverages.

What to do:

  • Try to breathe through your nose when outside.
  • Use a straw for cold drinks.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures in food or beverages if sensitivity is strong.
  • Use a sensitivity toothpaste approved by your orthodontist.

2. Changes in Metal Components

Although rare, metal wires and brackets may feel slightly tighter or looser in response to cold air. Sudden temperature shifts — like going from warm indoors to chilly outdoors — can cause minor expansion or contraction.

What to do:

  • Always alert your orthodontist if something feels out of place.
  • Avoid trying to adjust anything on your own.
  • Keep up with your regular checkups to ensure your appliance is working correctly.

3. Chapped Lips and Irritated Gums

Cold, dry air can lead to chapped lips or irritation around your brackets and wires.

What to do:

  • Use orthodontic wax as needed.
  • Apply a lip balm regularly to protect your lips.
  • Stay hydrated — it helps your tissues stay healthy.

How Cold Weather Affects Invisalign Wearers

Invisalign users may not deal with brackets or wires, but they’re not totally off the hook in the winter either.

1. Aligner Material Stiffness

Aligners are made from SmartTrack™ material designed to be flexible and effective at body temperature. But when exposed to cold air — like taking them out outdoors or rinsing with cold water — they may temporarily become stiffer or more brittle.

What to do:

  • Avoid removing your aligners outside in cold weather.
  • Always rinse with lukewarm water (not hot or cold).
  • Store aligners in their case when not in use.

2. Dry Mouth or Dehydration

In colder months, you may drink less water — but staying hydrated is just as important during orthodontic treatment. Aligners can trap dry air against your teeth and gums, contributing to irritation or mild inflammation.

What to do:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Remove your aligners before drinking anything but water.
  • Use a humidifier indoors if you’re experiencing dry mouth.

Winter Habits That Can Disrupt Treatment

Whether you wear braces or aligners, the winter season often comes with new routines, holiday treats, and travel — all of which can interfere with your progress if you’re not careful.

Skipping Appointments During Holidays

The holiday season can get busy fast. But skipping or delaying your adjustment appointments can slow down your treatment.

Tip: Try to schedule ahead or find an appointment early in the new year if you’ll be out of town.

Cold Weather Comfort Foods

Hearty winter foods like sticky desserts, crunchy snacks, or hot beverages can be risky with braces — and they may also increase staining for Invisalign users.

Tip:

  • Avoid hard, chewy, or sticky foods if you have braces.
  • Rinse your mouth after hot cocoa, tea, or wine if you’re wearing aligners.

Outdoor Activities and Accidents

Winter sports like skiing or snowboarding — even in nearby mountains — may increase your risk of injury.

Tip: Consider wearing a mouthguard if you’ll be active outdoors and always bring a backup case for your aligners if you’ll be away from home.

How to Protect Your Smile in Colder Weather

No matter what appliance you’re wearing, you can stay ahead of the cold season with a few extra precautions:

  • Keep a Travel Kit — Include orthodontic wax, lip balm, a toothbrush, aligner case, and floss.
  • Stay Hydrated — Dry weather means your mouth may need extra hydration.
  • Don’t Skip Appointments — Winter may be busy, but consistency is key.
  • Avoid Sudden Temperature Changes — Don’t rinse with hot water after being out in the cold.
  • Use Sensitive Toothpaste — Especially if you experience extra soreness in the cold.

When to Call Your Orthodontist

If you experience any of the following during colder months, don’t wait to get in touch:

  • A bracket or wire feels loose or painful
  • An aligner cracks, warps, or no longer fits correctly
  • You notice unusual soreness that lasts more than a few days
  • You’re experiencing excessive sensitivity or swelling

Your orthodontist can adjust your treatment plan or offer solutions to keep you comfortable through the winter season.

The Bottom Line: Cold Weather and Your Smile

While LA’s winters are usually mild, they can still have a subtle effect on your orthodontic journey. Whether you’re wearing braces or Invisalign, being mindful of how cold temperatures and dry air affect your teeth and appliances can help you stay comfortable, healthy, and on track with your treatment.

With just a little extra care, your smile will continue progressing — no matter the weather outside.

I recommend BHO if you want premier Invisalign treatment along with a strong connection with the people that help treat you.

I’ve been with BHO for around two and a half years now, and the amount of progress I’ve made in my bite is astounding. I wish I could attach photos, but I started off with a bite that looked like if you combined the worst parts of a crossbite and underbite, and then doubled the severity.

However, now I’m nearly done, and find that I when I smile and look in the mirror, I am genuinely happy at what I see. Dr. Madan is a great orthodontist without doubt, but also I believe equally as good in quality of character. The relationship between client and provider in any sort of medical service is paramount, and whenever I’ve brought up my concerns to her she’s answered wholeheartedly.

Once again, if you have any orthodontic issues - crooked teeth, gaps, or most importantly with your bite, then BHO won’t let you down.
Response from the owner:Thank you, Ryan, for your wonderful review! It’s fantastic to hear about your remarkable progress and your positive experience with Dr. Madan. We’re committed to building strong relationships and ensuring every smile shines bright!
