Emergency Orthodontics: What Counts as an Emergency & How to Handle It in LA

Love Yourself, Love Your Smile

Orthodontic treatment is generally a smooth process—but sometimes, unexpected issues pop up. Whether you’re wearing braces or clear aligners, knowing what counts as an orthodontic emergency—and how to handle it—can make a big difference in keeping your treatment on track.

Living in a fast-paced city like Los Angeles means your schedule is busy and your time is valuable. So when something feels off, it helps to know whether you can manage it at home or if you need to get help right away.

Here’s your guide to handling orthodontic emergencies with confidence, whether you’re commuting through Downtown LA or just relaxing at home in Beverly Hills.

What Qualifies as an Orthodontic Emergency?

Not every orthodontic issue requires a same-day visit. Many minor problems can be handled at home or addressed at your next scheduled appointment. However, there are some situations where immediate attention is necessary.

Urgent Orthodontic Issues That Need Prompt Attention

  • Severe mouth pain — Persistent pain not relieved by over-the-counter medication
  • Swelling or infection — Especially in the gums, face, or jaw area
  • Trauma to the mouth or teeth — Such as a fall, sports injury, or accident that causes bleeding or tooth movement
  • Broken or loose appliances causing injury — Sharp wires or broken brackets cutting into cheeks or gums

In these situations, it’s important to contact your orthodontist as soon as possible—or visit an emergency dentist or urgent care if your regular provider isn’t available.

Common Orthodontic Issues (and What to Do)

While not all orthodontic concerns require an emergency visit, they can still cause discomfort or interfere with your progress. Here’s how to manage some of the most common issues at home until you can be seen.

Loose Bracket

What it feels like: A bracket that detaches from the tooth and slides along the wire

What to do:

  • Leave it in place if it’s not causing discomfort
  • Use orthodontic wax to cushion any irritation
  • Contact your orthodontist to schedule a repair

Poking Wire

What it feels like: A wire that has shifted or extended beyond the brackets, poking the inside of your cheek or gums

What to do:

  • Use clean tweezers to gently push the wire back into place
  • Apply orthodontic wax over the end
  • Avoid hard or crunchy foods until it’s fixed

Lost or Broken Retainer

What it feels like: Your retainer is cracked, warped, or missing

What to do:

  • Contact your orthodontist as soon as possible to replace it
  • If your teeth feel like they’re shifting, you may need a temporary solution until a new one is made

Invisalign Tray Doesn’t Fit or Is Damaged

What it feels like: Your aligner is uncomfortable, not seating properly, or has cracked

What to do:

  • If you’re close to your next tray, your provider may instruct you to move forward
  • Don’t attempt to fix a cracked tray on your own
  • Keep wearing your most recent tray if your current one is unusable and call your orthodontist for advice

When to Call Your Orthodontist Immediately

If you’re unsure whether something is serious, err on the side of caution. Call your orthodontist if you experience:

  • Uncontrolled bleeding from your mouth or gums
  • Signs of infection (e.g., swelling, pus, fever)
  • Injuries to your face or teeth after an accident
  • Appliance parts that have become lodged or swallowed

Most orthodontic offices in Los Angeles will provide emergency contact information or after-hours guidance. Keep this info in your phone or posted somewhere at home just in case.

Finding Emergency Orthodontic Care in Los Angeles

In a city as large and spread out as LA, convenience matters—especially in urgent situations. If your orthodontist’s office is closed or unavailable, you have a few options:

  • Emergency dental clinics — Some LA-area dental practices offer urgent care for orthodontic patients, especially for trauma-related injuries
  • Orthodontic practices with flexible scheduling — Look for providers that offer same-day or next-day appointments
  • Virtual consultations — Many modern practices now offer video assessments to determine whether an in-person visit is needed

If you’re visiting Los Angeles and experience an emergency, call your home orthodontist first—they may be able to refer you to a trusted local provider.

What to Keep in Your At-Home Emergency Kit

Being prepared can help you stay calm and comfortable if a minor issue comes up. Consider keeping these items in an at-home kit:

  • Orthodontic wax — To cushion poking wires or rough brackets
  • Clean tweezers — For repositioning wires or removing debris
  • Nail clippers or wire cutters — In case a wire breaks and needs gentle trimming (only if advised by your orthodontist)
  • Salt — For warm saltwater rinses to soothe irritation
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers — Like ibuprofen or acetaminophen
  • A mirror and flashlight — To inspect hard-to-see areas

Keep a smaller version in your bag or car, especially if you’re on the go around LA.

Preventing Orthodontic Emergencies

While you can’t prevent every issue, there are things you can do to reduce your risk:

  • Avoid hard, sticky, or crunchy foods if you have braces
  • Wear a mouthguard for sports or active hobbies
  • Follow aligner wear instructions carefully
  • Clean appliances regularly to avoid buildup and breakage
  • Report small issues before they become bigger ones

Preventive care and regular check-ins go a long way in avoiding unplanned trips to the orthodontist.

Stay Calm, Stay On Track

Orthodontic emergencies can be stressful—but with the right knowledge and a little preparation, they don’t have to derail your treatment. Knowing what’s urgent, what’s manageable, and who to call helps you handle any issue with confidence.

Whether you’re a local Angeleno or just visiting, peace of mind comes from having a plan.
